Upcoming Schedule

Great practice today (Wednesday) ladies!

We will be having practice on Friday from 12 Noon until 1:30. We have a lot of new stuff to do, so it's important that everyone comes. Please let me know if you can't make it.

On Monday of next week we will practice right after school. I will give you the rest of next week's schedule on Monday.

We're halfway done and you guys have done a great job! But it's really important to finish the season as good or better than the first half.

---Thanks, Coach Frey

JHS vs. Round Lake @ CL South - Monday, December 22, 2008

JHS 39
Round Lake 12

In front of one of the largest crowds ever for the CL South Holiday Tournament, the Skyhawks played one of their best games of the year. Displaying great amounts of patience on offense, the Hawks got plenty of good looks and knocked down shot after shot. In fact, the sophs looked so good even the referees complemented them on their performance. Taylor Jackson led the Hawks with 8 points and Ashley Schuld pulled in about 73 rebounds (unofficially.)

Practice tomorrow (Tuesday) from 8am to 9:30am.

Interesting game stats:
  • The sophs held Round Lake to 5 offensive rebounds
  • and forced 27 turnovers
  • Morgan Berge led the team with 4 steals, Tayelor Neiss added 3
  • Ashley Schuld had 8 rebounds (7 in the first quarter) Mary Kate Wright pulled down 5 boards

JHS vs. Harvard @ CL South - Saturday, December 20, 2008

JHS 50
Harvard 12

The Skyhawks eclipsed the 50 mark for the first time all season, but it wasn't easy. Harvard was scrappy as usual and kept the game close for the first period. Trailing 4 to 3, the Hawks put their full court press on, the Hornets struggled and the sophs were able to put some points on the board outscoring Harvard the rest of the way 47 to 8, including outscoring the Hornets 22 to 0 in the second half. Morgan Berge was red hot with her jumper and scored 10 points for the second game in a row. The win gives the sophomore Hawks a 10-3 record for the season.

Next game - Monday 10AM - Bus at 8:30.

Interesting facts from the Harvard game:
  • Harvard only had 9 offensive rebounds
  • JHS forced Harvard into 29 turnovers

  • Katie Weingart had 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists
  • Alyssa Moran led the Hawks with 4 steals
  • Ashley Schuld had 4 blocked shots
  • Tara Connerty had double digit rebounds for the second game in a row with 12

JHS vs. Lakes @ CL South - Saturday, December 20, 2008

JHS 49
Lakes 17

The game against lakes was an easy win for the hawks but still many skills need to be improved upon. Patience on offense is a big one, waiting for the screens , and sprinting down the floor on offense is another. Tara Connerty led the team with 14 points and rebounding well as usual. Our zone defense was working well as the hawks were able to force lakes to turnover the ball multiple times. Morgan Berge added 10 points. The whole team contributed to the win, and ended the game with a score of 49-17.
~Alyssa Moran

Key stats:
  • Tara Connerty got the first double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds
  • Ashley Schuld ripped down 9 rebounds
  • The Hawks only gave up only 4 offensive rebounds
  • Mary Kate Wright dished out 3 assists
  • Katie Weingart had 4 steals to go along with 4 deflections
  • Tayelor Neiss had 4 deflections in the first 3 quarters before she left the game after getting punched in the mouth.

JHS vs. Marian Catholic - Thursday, December 18, 2006

Marian Catholic 47
JHS 24

"Crushed" - that's how Taylor Jackson described Thursday's game. That might be a little harsh. The Skyhawks did lose by their biggest margin of the year, but they also played their toughest opponent. Marian was more aggressive and played with more intensity than the sophs had seen all year and it took them awhile to get used to the pressure defense that Marian put on. Trailing 2 to 1 with a minute to go in the first period, Marian outscored the Skyhawks 18 to 7 to lead 20 - 8 at half.

The sophs came out with pressure defense of their own to start the second half and forced Marian into a handful of turnovers and a couple of timeouts. Johnsburg cut the 12 point Marian lead to 6, but Marian stayed composed and pulled away for the victory.

Interesting stats for the game:
  • Morgan Berge had 5 steals
  • Tayelor Neiss had 2 assists
  • Mary Kate Wright and Tara Connerty were 6 for 8 from the field - 75%
  • The rest of the team was 1 for 27 from the field - 3.7%
  • We forced Marian into 31 turnovers
  • Marian got 26 offensive rebounds
  • and, in what could be a world record, Johnsburg committed 47 turnovers

JHS vs. Crystal Lake South - Tuesday, December 16, 2008

JHS 49
CL South 42

It is certainly never boring when the sophomore Skyhawks take the court and Tuesday night was no different. South scored the first 7 points of the game and were up 12 - 5 at one point. But the Hawks finished with 16 points in the first quarter, their best opening stanza of the year. Crystal Lake South hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer and the Hawks went into the locker room trailing 26 to 23 at halftime. Holding the red hot Gators to only 6 points in the third, the girls grabbed the lead back at 35 to 32 at the end of 3 quarters. 5 different girls scored in the fourth and the sophs hung on to win 49 to 42.

For the game, Mary Kate Wright was 1 rebound short of 10. Ashley Schuld grabbed 8 rebounds, while Tayelor Neiss pulled in 7 rebounds. Morgan Berge dished out 4 assists. Jessica Stubitsch snared 4 steals and Katie Weingart had 3. Mary Kate Wright was 7 for 8 from the field and 2 for 2 from the line to score a season high 16 points for the Skyhawks.

JHS vs. Dundee Crown - Saturday, December

JHS 30
Dundee Crown 17

The sophomore girls were caught off guard to start the game on Saturday night by Dundee Crown's intensity. After struggling with the Chargers defense for much of the first quarter, the Hawks settled down, composed themselves and led 6 - 3 after one quarter. Using their speed and rebounding edge, the girls went to the fast break to extend their halftime lead to 16 - 8. Not only were the Skyhawks able to get easy baskets with their break, the girls played great defense and limited DC to 2 baskets in the 2nd and only 6 shots. Starting the third with a stifling back court defense and then pounding the ball inside to their posts, JHS found themselves up 28 to 12 at the end of three quarters and then cruised to the victory. The sophs are now 7 - 2 on the season.

JHS vs. Woodstock - Wednesday, December 10, 2008

JHS 41
Woodstock 12

After a very sluggish start to the game, the sophomore Skyhawks turned up their intensity and cruised to a victory over the Blue Streaks. Ahead 7 - 2 after 1 quarter and 17 - 4 at half, the girls looked for open teammates and took good shots and led 30 - 8 at the end of the third quarter.

Taylor Jackson led the Hawks with 9 points. While official stats are not quite ready, I don't think anyone got 10 rebounds, so there will be no new car giveaway this week.

Interesting facts for the game
  • The Hawks forced 27 turnovers
  • Woodstock had only 11 offensive rebounds
  • 4 girls had 5 or more rebounds (Jackson 5, Wright 6, Schuld 8, Weingart 5)
  • Tayelor Neiss led the Hawks with 4 assists (only 1 turnover) and 5 deflections
  • The sophs had a season low 14 turnovers
  • Alyssa Moran drew 2 charges, the only charges drawn by the Hawks the whole year
  • Katie Weingart led the team with 2 blocked shots
  • Morgan Berge had 5 steals

Practice on Thursday is at 2:30.

JHS vs. Cary Grove - Saturday, December 6, 2008

JHS 45
Cary Grove 39

The sophs found themselves up 20 to 16 at halftime despite committing 19 turnovers in the first 2 periods. The Hawks quickly got into foul trouble in the 3rd quarter and saw their lead shrink to 3. In the 4th, Cary got to within one, 39-38 with 1:30 to go, but the Hawks kept their composure and held off the pesky Trojans. The Skyhawks outscored CG 15 - 12 in the 4th quarter to win, 45 - 39. The sophs are now 5-2 on the young season.

Mary Kate Wright led the scoring for JHS with 14 points. Ashley Schuld scored 10 points, all in the fourth quarter. Ashley also had 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Morgan Berge had a season high 6 assists. Tayelor Neiss had 4 steals and 4 deflections. Katie Weingart shot 67% from the field and a season high 5 rebounds.
